How does an NOx sensor work?
NOx sensor is mounted behind the catalytic converter in the exhaust of a car. The NOx sensor measures the amount of nitrogen in the exhaust gases after they have been in the catalytic converter. The main function of a NOx sensor is to reduce harmful nitrogen emissions. A NOx sensor has two 'chambers'. In the first chamber, the amount of oxygen in the exhaust is kept at 10 ppm. This is done by a pump flow. In the second chamber, the so-called “NOx reaction” occurs. This means that the NOx sensor separates the nitrogen and oxygen in the exhaust, by using a catalytically active electrode. Installing an NOx sensor in your vehicle ensures that the nitrogen gases are stored, measured and converted into less harmful substances.
A defective NOx sensor
The main function of a NOx sensor is to reduce harmful nitrogen emissions. Due to the construction and position of the NOx sensor, it is very sensitive to malfunctions. As a result, the NOx sensor often fails and has a limited lifespan. If your NOx sensor does not function properly or is defective, this can have negative consequences. A malfunctioning NOx sensor sends incorrect values to the car's ECU. The ECU is the engine control unit of the car. This can cause the engine to go into emergency mode, increasing fuel consumption by about 20%. The engine may start to stutter or falter and the engine failure light will illuminate. The emission of harmful gases will also increase due to a defective or malfunctioning NOx sensor. Removing, disabling or deregistering the NOx sensor seems like a good solution. However, this is not the case. If you experience the above problems with the NOx sensor, it is advisable to have it repaired or replaced.
