NOx stands for nitrogen oxide. A NOx sensor is mounted behind the catalytic converter in the exhaust of a car. The sensor measures the amount of nitrogen in the gases after they have been in the catalytic converter. The main function of a NOx sensor is to reduce harmful nitrogen emissions. A NOx sensor separates the nitrogen and oxygen in the exhaust through a catalytically active electrode. The oxygen is measured in the same way as for example a lambda sensor. A NOx sensor in your car ensures that the nitrogen gases are stored, measured and converted into less harmful substances.
A NOx sensor has two ‘chambers’. In the first chamber, the amount of oxygen in the exhaust is kept at 10 ppm. This is done by a pump flow. In the second chamber, the so-called “NOx reaction” occurs. This means that in this chamber the nitrogen and oxygen is seperated.
A NOx sensor isn’t just quite expensive. The sensor is also sensitive. This means that the NOx sensor often fails and has a limited lifespan. A defective NOx sensor can have serious consequences. The car’s fuel consumption can increase by up to 20%, the engine can go into emergency mode and the emission of harmful gases can increase. In addition, a defective NOx sensor leads to the car stuttering and faltering and a lit engine failure light. Therefore there is a good chance that a car with a defective NOx sensor will not pass the MOT test.
